Sleepless in Seattle is a popular romantic movie that can be taken both seriously and humorously. There are big talks of love in this film as well as happy coincidences. This movie has won a Golden Glove award for best actor and best actress. There have been theatre plays that have created their own take on the movie. We have created a theatre show called Sleepless the musical which is part of a musical theatre performance starring Kimberly Walsh and Jay McGuiness.

Here are some facts you didn’t know about Sleepless in Seattle:

  1. The director of the movie had personal experience with the movie. There was an intentional plot which was taken from a movie called An Affair to Remember, she saw this movie when she was a little girl. This stuck with her into adulthood.
     
  2. Hollywood heavyweight Julia Roberts turned down the lead role as she was unavailable to do the movie. She added that Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks were the perfect fit for the movie.
     
  3. Tom Hanks believed that some of the storyline was a little unrealistic. He was talking about the scene where Sam opts out of spending the night with Victoria because Jonah was getting upset. He added that in reality, Sam would leave Jonah with the babysitter to spend the night with his girlfriend.
     
  4. Tom Hanks’ wife of many years Rita Wilson stared in the movie in a supporting role as his sister. They were married at this point but were cast as siblings. They were married in 1988 and remain married to this day.
     
  5. The most memorable romantic scene in the movie which was the climax of the movie didn’t actually take place in New York. The final scene was actually shot in a less glamourous location of Seattle.
     
  6. They filmed the movie in Seattle when there was a drought in place. They had to bring in the water trucks to create some rain. This waste of water in a drought really upset the people of the city.
     
  7. This romantic comedy wasn’t actually supposed to be a comedy but a tragic story which features a widower and his son. Nora Ephron was brought in to do a third rewrite of the script which brough in more comedy elements.
     
  8. Jason Schwartzman auditioned to play the son Jonah but they decided to go with Ross Malinger instead. He has retired from acting and owns a car shop in Malibu.
     
  9. Bill Pullman was told that he would have a bigger role in the movie. He played Annie’s allergy afflicted boyfriend. The movie was described to him as a more intense love triangle.
     
  10. Parker Posey was cut out of her would be first ever acting role. The director sent her a kind note explaining that it wasn’t her fault she was taken out. She was then added into a new movie called You’ve got mail.
