The theatre industry in the UK is a very important part of the country’s Arts and Culture sector. There were more than 19 million theatre tickets sold in the UK, with London being seen as the biggest market city. The figure of gross box office revenue was astounding, reaching roughly 645 million pounds in 2016. This was earned mostly by the West End theatre venues.

London’s Theatreland or the West End as some people like to call it is an area in Central London which has the highest number of commercial theatres. This is the equivalent to the Broadway in New York, it is one of the most popular theatre locations for English speaking performances in the world.

Musicals have fast become the most popular form of theatre plays in London. They recorded the highest attendance figures for performances in London in 2016, the box office revenues from London Musicals were valued at 401 million Pounds.

The Arts and Cultural industries such as the West End receive public funding through the Arts Council England. The theatre is one of the most subsidised art forms in England even though they earn enough revenue through their own trading activities. The most publicly funded theatre in the UK is the Royal National Theatre even though it generated revenues through the box office sales amounting to 2-3 million in 2016.

In this technological era and even with an increased amount of competition, theatre and performing arts attendance has remained stable throughout the years. There has not been a decline even when there is a rise of 3d and 4d cinema experiences for people to enjoy.

These figures are in contrast to the participation of individuals in theatre which is extremely low. Children tend to take part but this has been declining over the years. The number of secondary school students’ participation has doubled because the schools encourage pupils to take up Performing Arts and to take it up as a GCSE.

The vaults in London

The Vaults in London is home to an amazing documentary theatre and alternative arts show. Their mission is to embrace artists to collaborate and conspire from all walks of life to come together and inspire each other.

Waterloo’s Leake Street is a hide out for graffiti artists who have coloured the walls with layers of technicoloured designs. Once you pass that there are huge doors for the entrance of the Vault.

Everyone is encouraged to attend the daring, unusual and unknown area. They have asked every artist to mutate their art, make things that are challenging and imaginative. The Vault receives external documentary shows as well as creating their own shows in house.

The Vaults are at their busiest during February and March, this is when hundreds of new shows take over the venue. There are different artists performing and taking the audience on interactive adventures.

The vaults also hold dining theatre experiences for anyone that wants to grab a bite to eat whilst being entertained.
