  • Horses are very social; this means that you can meet friends and go horse riding or groom them together. There are many riding clubs and stables where you can form friendships. The horse community is very active, they will be more than helpful to a newbie.
  • Horses have a longer lifespan than other pets. They usually live for 25 – 30 years although this can vary. During this life span you can develop a wonderful bond with the horse.

What you need to own a horse

  • The most important thing you need to think about is the outdoor space that the horse will require. They will need area to graze and relax, most horses will need to be outdoors for most of the day. You must check on the horses periodically to ensure they are not at risk. The horse should be encouraged to exercise so that it is not overweight. Horses are herd animals which means that they enjoy the company of other horses. It is best if they are in fields amongst other horses.

  • Once you have the shelter ready, you will need some tools and equipment for the upkeeping of the horse. Feed buckets and hay nets are a must, they don’t necessarily cost an arm and leg as there are plenty of second-hand stuff for sale. Always check what they were used for before if you are going down the second-hand route. A pitchfork will be good so you can shift around the clean and dirty bedding for the stable. Another essential is a broom, you can clear smaller bedding with this.
  • If you are planning to move your horse around the country then you will need to get a horse trailer, this can cost between £3,000 - £5,000 for a used one but a new one will be upwards of £5,000. If you are looking to purchase a second-hand one then you must ensure that everything is in working order, check for rust and rot or a leaking roof.
  • For grooming the horse, you will need to get a halter and lead rope, this will help you lead your horse. You will need some grooming gear too to keep your horse’s coat in a excellent condition. You will need to purchase a hoof pick, curry comb, body brush and mane comb.
  • A stable rug should be purchased for the colder months as your horse will need extra protection for the colder days.
  • You will need to purchase a horse tack to be able to ride on the horse which includes saddle blanket, saddle, girth and cinch, reins, stirrups, martingale, horse boots and a bridle.
